What is it?
An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments of the ankle joints. There are two sets of ankle ligaments, the medial (on the inside) and the lateral (on the outside) of the ankle. There are various grades of injury - Grade 1, 2 or 3, which range from a strain to a complete tear.
What causes it?
The ankle ligaments provide the ankle with stability, especially when on uneven surfaces. Sometimes you can just 'go over' on your ankle for no particular reason, or it can happen when you land awkwardly on uneven ground.
What can we do for it?
Lots! In the acute stage we can use our kinesiotaping to help reduce some of the swelling and bruising. We can advise you around icing, and early mobilization. We can use some of our manual therapy skills to help get the ankle moving normally again, or prevent the ligament from stiffening up with scar tissue.
Ankle rehab exercises are the key to a really successful outcome. Exercises to mobilize, strengthen, improve balance and proprioception are necessary to ensure a full recovery and prevent and re-injuries.
