Plantar fasciitis can be a very painful condition affecting the heel and sometimes sole of the foot. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that covers the sole of the foot and attached to the heel bone. It can become very sore and irritated, causing pain on weightbearing especially first thing in the morning.
Overloading the plantar fascia causes this condition, lots of factors can cause overload to the tissue. Inappropriate training patterns, poor footwear, faulty biomechancs and muscle balance can all stress this tissue and causes it to become very painful.
Identifying the factors that have contributed to it’s development is really important, just treating the symptoms and not getting to the root cause doesn’t fix this problem for good. We will do a thorough assessment to work out what’s causing the problem, and then introduce a management plan. The plan is likely to include some activity modification, some hands-on treatment, and some specific exercises. Sometimes we may need to refer you to a podiatrist to have your foot biomechanics assessed and then corrected with some custom made orthotics.
