Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD)

What is it?

Temporomandibular Dysfunction or TMD is a musculoskeletal disorder which affects the muscles within the mouth used for chewing (masticatory muscles) and the temporomandibular joint (jaw).

It often presents as pain and tenderness around the affected ear(s), with the pain transferring into the lower jaw region in some cases. The pain is often aggravated by chewing or eating and can be associated with reduced opening of the mouth and clicking or crunching sounds when opening or closing the mouth.

What causes it?

The cause of TMD can be due to a combination of factors, many of which are often not apparent to the sufferer. These can include facial trauma, emotional stress and sleep bruxism (teeth grinding at night). What sufferers do during the day can also have a big impact on their condition. Biting nails, chewing gum and even their sitting posture can all have a big impact on their symptoms.

What can we do for it?

At Physio Art we have a specialist physiotherapist in treating TMD whose knowledge and skills has changed the lives of patients who suffer with jaw pain.

She uses her expert assessment skills to delve into the underlying cause of TMD and works with patients to develop their skills in managing their own symptoms.

Goal setting is an essential part of the assessment process to ensure that she works with the client towards goals that matter to them.

Using her skills in manual therapy she can also help to give clients relief from their symptoms during the treatment session. A tailored exercise and management programme will then be used to help to carry over the benefits we gain during the physiotherapy sessions.

We are passionate about giving individualised treatment and managing TMD symptoms to help clients live a more pain free life.
