Corticosteroid Injections

Corticosteroid Injections at PhysioArt

What are steroid injections?

Corticosteroid injections are anti-inflammatory medicines used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Here at PhysioArt we have two clinicians qualified to provide this treatment for a range of conditions such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Frozen shoulders
  • Greater Trochanteric pain syndrome
  • Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
  • Mortons Neuroma
  • De querveins

Receiving an injection can create a ‘window of opportunity’ for your pain to settle. As we pride ourselves in providing evidenced based treatment and care, we also encourage that following your injection, you continue your exercise program provided by your Physio in order to gain the best long term outcomes following your injection.

Who can receive a steroid injection?

Providing you are over the age of 18 and do not take any regular medications that are contraindicated, anyone is able to receive a steroid injection. Prior to receiving this treatment, an assessment will be required by one of our practitioners to ensure it is appropriate and safe to proceed.

Possible Side effects:

Most people have steroid injections without any side effects. They can be a little uncomfortable at the time of injection, but many people feel that this is not as bad as they feared.

Occasionally people notice a flare-up in their pain within the first 24 hours after an injection. This usually settles by itself within a couple of days, but taking simple pain relief like paracetamol will help. Additional possible but extremely rare side effects include:

  • Temporary bruising or a collection of blood under the skin
  • Flushing of the face for a few hours
  • An infection, causing redness, swelling and pain – get medical advice as soon as possible if you have these symptoms
  • A loss of fat where the injection was given – this can cause dimples in the skin and may be permanent
  • Paler skin around the site of the injection – this may be permanent
  • If you have diabetes, your blood sugar level may go up for a few days
  • If you have high blood pressure, your blood pressure may go up for a few days

If you would like to ask more questions around this, please feel free to give us a call or book in an appointment so this can be discussed further.
