Who can benefit

Pilates is a fantastic system of exercise that uses the body as an integrated whole and is designed to create balance within the body, a balance between strength and stability with flexibility and fluidity.

Pilates exercises require full concentration, in order to co-ordinate the breath with the flowing effortless movements. It’s mindfulness through movement. Our Pilates students report huge benefits to not only their physical wellbeing, but their mental wellbeing also.

Pilates at Physio Art

We have three Pilates teachers at Physio Art between them delivering a range of online and in-person classes every week. Each teacher is slightly different bringing their own personality and experiences into the classes.

We teach Pilates on a one to one basis, a one to two basis, and small groups of six.  We believe in order to truly benefit from Pilates people need to be taught and closely supervised. We usually recommend that people have a couple of one to one sessions initially, and then we can slot them in to an appropriate group.

Exercises usually take place on a mat or in standing and can include the use of equipment such as therabands, foam rollers, exercise balls and magic circles.

If you are thinking of trying Pilates because you have had some pain or injury recently we usually recommend having an assessment from one of our physios first. A physiotherapy assessment can guide the Pilates teacher with regard to a targeted Pilates based exercise programme.

Pilates

Chair Pilates

This class incorporates all the principles of Pilates, but without needing to get down onto the floor. We will use the pilates equipment in both standing and seated positions to strengthen your core muscles, work on balance, and promote mobility.

Pilates

Express Pilates

The idea of this class is to provide a break during the working day, using Pilates based exercises and equipment to stretch muscles that become shortened and overworked by sitting, strengthen postural muscles, and create some relaxation in the nervous system. Even better if you can brisk walk to the class and back to
get a bit of cardio!
The goal is to try and break some of the negative impacts of sitting, give you ideas of helpful things you can do yourself at home, and ultimately give you more control over pain linked with sitting for long periods.
  • Testimonials

"The physiotherapy service I’ve received at Physio Art from Ruth has been absolutely life changing. I’ve never been stronger, more mobile or more aware of my own body. The exercises in the app have been easy to follow and remember, and more importantly I’ve been able to step down from more invasive treatment for my back and get back to work."

    KATY WILLITTS

  • Testimonials

"Sophie has helped me rehab a long standing shoulder issue resulting from overuse of playing tennis and other racket sports. She was quick to identify the condition, gave an accurate timeline of recovery and helped my put in place various exercises over the next few months to get to a state where I can exercise and play sports free of the pain again. I'd highly recommend Sophie and Physio Art."

His knowledge and advice was excellent and the results began to show during the appointment. Every physio we have seen there has been highly professional, incredibly helpful and so kind. "

FAQs

Pilates FAQs

Pilates can support weight loss, especially when combined with a healthy diet and other physical activity. While it may not burn as many calories as high-intensity workouts, it helps build lean muscle, improve posture, and increase body awareness—all of which contribute to a healthier metabolism and long-term weight management.
While both focus on flexibility, core strength, and mind-body connection, yoga has a spiritual and meditative foundation with a broader variety of poses. Pilates is more focused on precise movements that strengthen the core and stabilising muscles.
Wear comfortable, fitted clothing that allows you to move freely and lets your instructor see your form—think leggings or shorts and a close-fitting top. Avoid clothes that are too loose, as they can get caught in equipment. Most Pilates classes are done barefoot or in grip socks.
Qualified Pilates instructors typically complete a comprehensive training programme that includes anatomy, mat and equipment-based exercises, teaching practice, and assessments. Training hours and certifications vary by provider, but reputable instructors often complete 450+ hours of study and ongoing professional development.
Yes, Pilates burns calories. While it’s not as intense as cardio workouts, it helps burn fat over time by increasing muscle tone, improving posture, and supporting better movement efficiency throughout the day.
Yes, Pilates is a form of low-impact strength training. It uses bodyweight and resistance (e.g. springs or bands) to build muscular strength, particularly in the core, hips, glutes, and shoulders. It’s excellent for building control and functional strength without putting excess strain on the joints.
Pilates builds lean, toned muscle by targeting deep stabilising muscles and improving muscular endurance. While it won’t lead to bulky muscle gain, it can significantly improve definition, especially in the core, arms, and legs, making it ideal for those seeking balanced strength and posture.
Clinical Pilates is tailored and often led by physiotherapists or rehabilitation professionals to address specific injuries or conditions. It’s more individualised and may be part of a treatment plan. Regular Pilates, by contrast, is more generalised and suitable for overall fitness, flexibility, and strength.
