Acupuncture

What is it?

Acupuncture, once perceived, as an ancient Eastern technique is now a mainstream core skill of most musculo-skeletal physiotherapists.

It can be used to enhance the body’s own healing capabilities in the treatment of chronic grumbly injuries such as Achilles Tendinopathy or Tennis Elbow. Acupuncture has been well studied and we use it within the framework of sound clinical and research evidence.

Usually acupuncture will form part of your treatment; it’s a fantastic adjunct to use alongside an exercise programme or our other manual therapy techniques.

Acupuncture

What conditions can we treat with acupuncture?

We treat a whole variety of conditions with acupuncture.

It can be particularly effective when there is a lot of muscle tension for example;

  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Whiplash Injury
  • Cervicogenic Headaches
  • Sciatica

Acupuncture can also help with sports injuries including;

  • Shin Splints
  • Illiotibial band syndrome
  • Runners knee
  • Achillies tendinopathy

Other conditions such as osteoarthritis or inflammatory arthritis appear to respond well with Acupuncture.

Acupuncture

What points are used?

We use a combination of traditional Chinese points and modern techniques and point selection. We needle a lot of trigger points and find patients respond very well to this.
Acupuncture

Does it hurt?

It depends. Some points you don’t feel at all however trigger point needling can create a very strong sensation, in fact, we aim for this. In our experience, the more you feel it at the time, the better it works. It can be sore for a day or so after but usually once the treatment soreness settles, so has the injury pain.

But usually treatment will involve some hands-on treatment, and a specifically graded exercise programme, with the goal of getting you to return to what you love to do.

Acupuncture

How does it work?

We think acupuncture has the ability to stimulate the body’s self repair mechanisms. We also think that acupuncture reduces pain by altering pain processing and by stimulating the brain to release it’s natural painkillers.

We are members of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists. For more information on acupuncture it is worth visiting their site: www.aacp.uk.com

  • Testimonials

    "The physiotherapy service I’ve received at Physio Art from Ruth has been absolutely life changing. I’ve never been stronger, more mobile or more aware of my own body. The exercises in the app have been easy to follow and remember, and more importantly I’ve been able to step down from more invasive treatment for my back and get back to work."

  • Testimonials

    "Sophie has helped me rehab a long standing shoulder issue resulting from overuse of playing tennis and other racket sports. She was quick to identify the condition, gave an accurate timeline of recovery and helped my put in place various exercises over the next few months to get to a state where I can exercise and play sports free of the pain again. I'd highly recommend Sophie and Physio Art."

His knowledge and advice was excellent and the results began to show during the appointment. Every physio we have seen there has been highly professional, incredibly helpful and so kind. "

She always listens intently and delves deep into my experience so I feel completely confident in the course of treatment she recommends. I love that she is so good at explaining what is affecting the problem and often there is more at play than just the mechanics of the body. Any consultation with Sarah is fascinating as well as healing!"
